Chapter XLVII. That Plato Also Enacts That the Citizens Should Be Divided Into Twelve Tribes in Imitation of the Hebrew Nation

THE whole nation of the Hebrews having been divided into twelve tribes, Plato also in like manner enjoins by law the necessity of maintaining the propriety of this in the case of his own citizens, speaking as follows:

[P] [1] ‘Let our whole country be divided into twelve parts as equal as possible, and for each part let one tribe assigned by lot furnish annually five men as guardians of the public lands and commanders of cavalry.’

And again he says:[2]

‘Let the generals elected propose for themselves twelve commanders of infantry, one for each tribe.’
