Chapter 12
The Scripture says, then: And the chief eunuch hearkened to them and tested them for ten days; and after the end of the ten days their looks appeared good, and they were stronger in flesh than the young men who ate at the king’s table.
These, then, being nourished with bread and water only, but adorned with heavenly wisdom, obtained grace beyond all the young men of their own age.
For God gave them understanding and discernment in all learning and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in every vision and in dreams. And after the end of the days the chief eunuch brought them in before the king, and the king spoke with them; and among them all none were found like Daniel and Hananiah and Mishael and Azariah.
These, then, the Word brought forward in all wisdom, shown to be faithful martyrs in Babylon, so that through them the objects of Babylonian worship might be put to shame, and Nebuchadnezzar be vanquished by three youths, and through their faith the fire in the furnace be put to flight, and the blessed Susanna be delivered from death, and the vain lust of the lawless elders be exposed.
These victories were won in the city of Babylon by these four youths who were a care to God and who held the fear of God in their heart. Come, then, blessed Daniel, draw near, having become the avenger of the blessed Susanna, that you may show us also the things that are to come.
