Chapter 125
But why should you busy yourself about the times and search out the day of the Lord, when the Savior has hidden it from us? Tell me, do you know the day of your own departure, that you should meddle about the consummation of the whole world?
For if God were not longsuffering toward us because of his surpassing compassion, long ago all things would have been wiped out.
Read what is said also by John in the Apocalypse: “And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the name of Jesus underneath the altar, and they cried out to God and said: ‘How long, O Lord our God, do you not judge and avenge our blood upon those who dwell on the earth?’ And white robes were given to them, and it was said to them that they should wait yet a little while, until their fellow servants also should fulfill their testimony, those who were about to be slain as they themselves were.”
If, then, the martyrs, who poured out their own blood for Christ, were commanded to be longsuffering, why do you too not show longsuffering, that others also may be saved and the number of the called and the saints may be fulfilled?
