Chapter 134
In order, then, to show the time when he was to come—which the blessed Daniel desired to see—he says: “And after the seven weeks, another sixty-two weeks,” which comprise a span of four hundred and thirty-four years.
For after the people had returned from Babylon under the leadership of Jesus the son of Josedek, and Ezra the scribe, and Zerubbabel the son of Salathiel, who was of the tribe of Judah, four hundred and thirty-four years passed until the coming of Christ, so that the Priest of priests might appear in the world and he who takes away the sins of the world might be openly manifested, as John says concerning him: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”
And in like manner Gabriel also says, “and to wipe away iniquities and to make atonement for sins.”
And who it was that wiped away our iniquities, Paul the apostle teaches you, saying: “He himself is our peace, who made the two one and broke down the dividing wall of the partition, the enmity, in his flesh, abolishing the law of the commandments in its decrees, and wiping away the handwriting of our sins that was against us, which was contrary to us, and he has taken it out of the midst, nailing it to the cross”—that is, to wipe away the iniquities and to make atonement for the iniquities.
And who are those whose iniquities are atoned for, if not those who believe in his name and make atonement before his face through good works?
