Chapter 148

Again he says: “And the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north, to make agreements with him. But the arms of him who brings her shall not stand, and she shall be crushed and shall fall, both she and he who brings her.”

And this too came to pass. For a certain Ptolemais, who was then reigning over Egypt, set out together with her two sons, Ptolemy and Philometor, to make agreements with Antiochus, king of Syria. And indeed, when she had come near Scythopolis, she was there put to death; for he who was bringing her betrayed her. Then the two brothers joined battle with one another, and Philometor was slain, but Ptolemy prevailed.

So then a clash again arose between Ptolemy and Antiochus; for the Scripture speaks thus: “And the king of the south shall rise up against the king of the north, and a seed shall rise up from her.”

And what seed but Ptolemy, who joined battle against Antiochus?

Against him Antiochus marched out, and not prevailing over him he became a fugitive and returned again to Antioch, gathering a larger throng.

Ptolemy therefore took all his armor and led it into Egypt; and the Scripture is fulfilled, just as Daniel says: “And he shall carry their gods, and their molten images, and all their precious gold, into Egypt.”
