Father John of Kronstadt's direct, uncompromising answer to Leo Tolstoy's pamphlet Appeal to the Clergy, written in the years after Tolstoy's formal excommunication by the Holy Synod. Point by point (the Creed, the Old and New Testaments, repentance, the Sermon on the Mount) Kronstadt prosecutes Tolstoy's arguments rather than merely rebutting them, in the full, unsoftened register of a churchman convinced he is answering a fool according to his folly.
