Editor’s Introduction
The third and final volume of collected sermons for the Sundays after Pentecost—this one covering the sixteenth through the twenty-fifth Sundays—drawn from the Gospel readings appointed for each week: the parable of the talents, the Canaanite woman’s persistent faith, the miraculous catch of fish and the calling of the first Apostles, the parable of the sower, the healing of the demon-possessed man of the Gadarenes, the raising of Jairus’s daughter and the healing of the woman with the flow of blood, the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, and the parable of the Good Samaritan.
As in the earlier volumes, several Sundays recur with more than one sermon on the same Gospel text. A sustained theme throughout is the peril of hardheartedness toward the poor, developed most fully in the several sermons on the rich man and Lazarus, alongside a recurring call to living, active faith as the means of both bodily and spiritual healing.
