Editor’s Introduction

The second of three collected volumes of sermons for the Sundays after Pentecost—this one covering the sixth through the fifteenth Sundays—drawn from the Gospel readings appointed for each week: the healing of the paralytic, the feeding of the five thousand, Christ and Peter walking on the water, the healing of the demon-possessed boy, the parable of the unforgiving servant, the rich young man, the parable of the vineyard, the parable of the wedding feast, and the greatest commandment.

Several Sundays recur more than once in the collection, each with its own sermon on the same Gospel text approached from a different angle. A recurring theme is the contrast between attachment to earthly wealth and the treasure of eternal life, most sustained in the several sermons on the rich young man and the vineyard parable, alongside a call to steadfast faith amid life’s storms drawn from the account of Peter walking on the water.
