§ 6: Proof of the Soul’s Immortality From God’s Inner Revelation

As proof of the immortality of the human soul, we bring God’s inner revelation, through which humanity is taught supernatural truths and knows what is beneficial and useful to it. Through this inner revelation of God, often does humanity owe its salvation—both of soul and life; it rescues it from danger through mystical inspiration and announces to it, both when awake and in sleep, things it has unknowingly encountered and those not yet brought to effect, and it reveals to it God’s counsels. These historical events are so many testimonies supporting the relationship of humanity to God, its high dignity, God’s providence toward humanity, the spiritual nature of humanity, and the soul’s immortality; those who deny these truths deny themselves, not knowing the height of their own dignity and the end and purpose of their presence in this world, as well as where they come from and where they are going; and thus they traverse the course of life like irrational animals and approach the end in fear and trembling, standing before the yawning grave. How often, pondering before it, are they led into healthier thoughts and confess their error! How often do they deny their entire past life for beliefs formed as the grave approaches that promise the soul’s immortality! And this often happens; for those approaching life’s end draw near to the other life; the soul has already shed much of its burden, and the bonds holding it to the earth are broken; the spirit is freed from many vain occupations, and the darkness covering it is healed; the light of eternal life enters and illuminates the darkened mind, which in amazement gazes on the risen heavenly light and seeks to investigate it; it meditates on eternal life and in meditation surrenders the spirit, entirely persuaded of it; eternal life has already been revealed to it.
