Photios on the Reconciliation of the Churches

1 Photios, the most holy patriarch, said: It is the divine will of Him who came down from heaven and took up our nature, that He might reconcile the human race, which had sinned from many ages, to His Father. And now your holiness sees together with us that, according to the will of our all-compassionate Lord Jesus Christ, and the mandates of the most holy pope and the intercessions of the holy apostles, and moreover those of the most God-beloved metropolitan and bishops: Peter, the most God-fearing deacon and representative of Martyropolis, having just arrived, [coming] to them from the throne, and [bearing] together with him a letter of the most holy patriarch of Jerusalem—it pleases them, and the holy synod commands, that he enter. The holy synod said: Let him enter. And when he had entered, that having paid his reverence to Photios the most holy patriarch, the letters which had come to him from the most holy patriarch Photios were delivered to him, and peace from his holiness was given to them.

2 Peter, the most God-fearing presbyter and cardinal, said: Behold the votes of the bishops, how they were of one mind and received Photios the most holy patriarch through the holy Church of the Romans.

24 After the commonitory had been completed, Peter, the most God-fearing cardinal, said: Does it please your holiness? And the holy synod answered: It pleases us—and especially the handwritten subscriptions for the common peace and concord of the holy Church of God, and for the reception of Photios the most holy and ecumenical patriarch. And to these all gave their assent: Many be the years of the emperor!
