[Philo Judaeus, On the Essenes and Therapeutae]
Read, also, his description of the lives of those amongst the Jews who led a life of contemplative or active philosophy, the Essenes[1] and Therapeutae. The latter not only built monasteries and holy places (semneia,to use their own word), but also laid down the rules of monasticism followed by the monks of the present day.
