Saint Raphael of Brooklyn

1860–1915 19th–20th c. 1 work

St. Raphael of Brooklyn (Raphael Hawaweeny, 1860–1915) was the first Orthodox bishop to be consecrated on North American soil and a foundational figure in the establishment of Orthodox Christianity in the United States.

Born in Shweir, Lebanon, in 1860 to a Syrian Christian family, Raphael received his theological formation in Damascus and later at the Kiev Theological Academy in Russia, where he distinguished himself in Greek patristics and Arabic ecclesiastical literature. He was ordained a deacon in 1885 and a priest in 1886, and served for several years as a teacher and scholar in the patriarchate of Antioch before being sent as a missionary to North America.

Arriving in the United States in 1895, he took up the pastoral care of the Syrian and Arab Orthodox immigrants scattered across the continent, travelling tirelessly to organize parishes in cities from Boston to San Francisco. He guided his flock with pastoral wisdom and theological precision, writing in English to address the practical and doctrinal questions that arose in the new American context. His 1899 response to Pope Leo XIII's encyclical on the Eastern Rites is a vigorous defense of Orthodoxy against Uniate pressure; his 1912 pastoral letter on relations with the Anglican (Episcopal) Church set clear canonical boundaries for the faithful, balancing charity with doctrinal clarity.

In 1904 he was consecrated Bishop of Brooklyn by Archbishop Tikhon (Bellavin) — the future Patriarch of Moscow — becoming the first Orthodox bishop consecrated in the Americas. He continued his episcopal ministry until his death on 27 February 1915 in Brooklyn, New York.

The Orthodox Church in America glorified him as a saint in the year 2000. His relics rest at Saint Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the oldest Antiochian parish in North America, which he had founded. He is commemorated on 27 February.
