187. The Lord’s Question: “Whose Son Is the Christ?” Mt. 22:41–46; Mk. 12:35–37; Lk. 20:40–44

When the Pharisees were gathered together again, the Lord Jesus, continuing to teach in the temple, asked them, ‘The scribes say that the Messiah is the Son of David; what do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is He?’ They said to Him, ‘The son of David.’

The Lord said to them, ‘How then does David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, in the Book of Psalms call Him Lord, when he says: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies beneath your feet (Ps. 109:1)? If David himself calls Him Lord, how then is He his son?’

And no one could answer Him a word; and from that day on no one dared to ask Him anything further. And the multitude of people listened to Him with great delight.
