226. The Lord’s Passion: The Sentence of Condemnation. Mt. 27:24–26; Mk. 15:15; Lk. 23:25; Jn. 19:13–16
When Pilate heard these words, he brought the Lord Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat, in a place called the Stone Pavement, and in Hebrew called Gabbatha.
It was the day of Preparation for the Passover, and it was about the sixth hour.
And Pilate said to the Jews: Behold your King! But they cried out: Take away, take away, crucify him! Pilate said to them: Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered: We have no king but Caesar.
Pilate, seeing that nothing availed, but the disturbance was increasing, took water and washed his hands before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man; see to it yourselves. All the people answered him: Let his blood be on us and on our children.
Then finally Pilate, wishing to satisfy the people, delivered the Lord to them to be crucified.
