250. The Jews’ Attempt to Obscure the Truth of the Resurrection. Mt. 28:11–15

As the women went with the good tidings of the Lord’s resurrection to the Apostles, some of the guards, having entered the city, reported to the chief priests all that had taken place. And these, having gathered with the elders and taken counsel, gave a considerable sum of money to the soldiers and said: Say that His disciples came at night and stole Him while we slept. And if this rumor reaches the governor, we will persuade him and rid you of trouble. They, taking the money, acted as they had been instructed; and this saying has been spread abroad among the Jews to this day.
