36. A Sabbath Sermon in the Synagogue and the Casting Out of a Demon. Mk. 1:21–28; Lk. 4:31–37

Soon after that, on a Sabbath, He entered the synagogue and taught. And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority, and He taught as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.

In the synagogue there was a man possessed by an unclean spirit, having a demon of an unclean spirit; and he cried out with a loud voice: What have You to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are, the Holy One of God. But Jesus rebuked him, saying: Be silent and come out of him. And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him, and threw him down in the middle of the synagogue and came out of him, but did not harm him at all.

And fear came upon all, and they were all amazed, and discussing among themselves, they asked one another: What is this? What new teaching is this, that He commands even the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they obey Him and come out?

And immediately His fame spread throughout all the surrounding region, throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
