76. The Calming of the Storm During the Crossing of the Sea. Mt. 8:23–27; Mk. 4:35–41; Lk. 8:22–25

Seeing a great multitude, the Lord entered into a boat. Behind Him, having sent away the multitude, His disciples entered also, and He said to them: Now let us go across to the other side of the lake. And they set forth. And other boats followed after Him.

During their voyage He fell asleep. And behold, a great storm arose, a fierce wind, and there was great turbulence upon the sea; the waves beat upon the boat so that it was covered with waves and already began to fill with water; they were being swamped, and they were in danger.

And the Lord was sleeping on the stern upon a pillow. Then His disciples, coming to Him, awakened Him and said: Master! Master! we perish. Lord! save us: we perish. So they wake Him and say to Him: Teacher! Do you not care that we are perishing?

The Lord said to them: Why are you so fearful, O you of little faith? Then, rising up, He rebuked the wind and the surge of the water and said to the sea: Silence! cease! The wind ceased, and there was great calm upon the sea. Then He said to His disciples: Where is your faith? Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?

And the men, marveling at what had happened, spoke to one another in great fear, saying: Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and the winds and the sea obey Him?
