91. Walking on the Water. Mt. 14:24–33; Mk. 6:47–52; Jn. 6:16–21

When evening had come, His disciples went down to the sea and, having entered into the boat, set out toward the other side of the sea, toward Capernaum. Darkness had come on, and the Lord Jesus had not yet come to them. A strong wind was blowing, and the sea was troubled.

The boat was now in the middle of the sea, and it was being tossed about by the waves, because the wind was against them. Seeing them toiling in their rowing, the Lord Jesus came to them, walking upon the sea. About the fourth watch of the night, when they had rowed some twenty-five or thirty furlongs, He came near to them and wished to pass by them. But they, seeing Him walking upon the sea and drawing near to the boat, and thinking that it was a ghost, were terrified and cried out, saying: It is a phantom, and they were afraid. They all saw Him and were frightened.

But the Lord Jesus immediately spoke to them and said: Take heart; it is I, do not be afraid! Peter answered Him and said: Lord! if it is you, command me to come to you upon the water. He said: Come. And Peter, going out of the boat, walked upon the water to come to the Lord Jesus. But seeing the strong wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, cried out: Lord! save me. The Lord Jesus immediately stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him: O you of little faith, why did you doubt? And He entered into the boat with him; and when they had entered into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying: Truly you are the Son of God! They were exceedingly amazed and wondered greatly.
