One Must Both Do Work and Not Turn the Mind Away From God

One must both do work and not turn the mind away from God—that is, to be as though standing in prayer. This is the law: work with your hands, but be with God in mind and heart. Write, yet let your mind not depart from God and do not let warmth diminish or watchfulness weaken. How to succeed in this, experience will teach. And so, you will gain a new skill—and grow even firmer in inner dwelling. (9, 229–230)
