Noetic Prayer, Warming the Heart, Leads it Into Prayer of the Mind in the Heart
At first the mind prays with effort, forcing itself to prayer by the power of will. And this is certainly noetic prayer. Noetic prayer gradually warms the heart and leads it into another prayer—prayer of the mind in the heart. The heart, having grown accustomed to praying under the action of the mind, and having warmed, itself begins to move toward prayer and to draw the mind into it. This prayer of the heart—true prayer, as it should be—prayer that embraces all the existence of a person, for where the heart is, there is the whole person. This state shows itself as a weight inward, which happens during prayer, reading, reflection, and even without all this, simply—while doing some work. The latter is higher than the former. (15, 483)
