The More the Heart Warms, the More Self-moving the Prayer of the Mind in the Heart Becomes
This saving prayer [the Jesus Prayer] is at first ordinarily laborious, worked at. But if one does not tire of laboring at it, it will become self-moving, will be performed of itself, like a stream murmuring in the heart. This is a great good, and it is worth laboring to attain it… It is better to take on the work with zeal and not to turn back until you reach what you desire, or until this prayer begins to move of itself in the heart: after that, only sustain it. The heart warmth, or burning of the spirit, spoken of before, come precisely by this path. The more the Jesus Prayer penetrates the heart, the more the heart warms and the more self-moving the prayer becomes, so that the fire of spiritual life in the heart ignites, and its burning becomes unceasing, at the same time as the Jesus Prayer fills all the heart and becomes constantly moving.
