There is a Jesus Prayer and Warmth, Yet No True Prayer

Prayer practice does not form all at once… but requires prolonged labor and self-exertion. It is in this very labor of forming prayer practice that the Jesus Prayer and its accompanying warmth help best of all. Mark this, father: they are means, not the thing itself. It is possible to have the Jesus Prayer and warmth present, yet no true prayer. Strange as it seems, it does happen so! (7, 63)
