All Rules Can Be Laid Aside Only by Those in Whom Noetic Prayer Has Become Unceasing

What is said about laying aside chanting for noetic prayer applies to those who have shut themselves away and to those persons in whom noetic prayer has unfolded and become unceasing. These can do everything instead of church service and cell prayer… Prayer-reading then ceases of itself. In this way, laying aside chanting does not apply to us, we must attend church services and fulfill what is appointed for cell prayer-reading. (7, 57)

But prayer-reading must still be performed in its proper time… All the great men of prayer did this. And it is necessary because the soul is seized with torpor, and it is fit for nothing… Then even with another’s prayer and mentally-vocally to pray—all the same it is good than to fall completely asleep without having prayed… or to spend the morning without prayer.
