The Habit of Always Keeping Attention on the Lord Will Not Allow Sorrow

The whole matter is to become accustomed to always keeping attention on the Lord who is everywhere present, all-seeing, and desirous that all be saved, and ready to assist in that. This habit will not allow sorrow—whether inward or outward sorrow troubles, because it provides the soul with complete satisfaction, which, by filling the soul, leaves no room for any feeling of want and insufficiency, placing itself and all one’s concerns in the hands of the Lord and producing the feeling of His unceasing intercession and help. (10, 197–198)

Attention in the heart and warmth are the natural fruits of prayer

The fruit of prayer is the concentration of attention in the heart and warmth. This is a natural fruit. Everyone can attain it. And this prayer [the Jesus Prayer] everyone can perform, not only a monk but also a layperson. (7, 193)
