Chapter 200

On the Artistic Form of Practicing Prayer

The artistic form of practicing prayer is described by the fathers as an external aid and is subordinate to the inner work. But nowadays most people adopt only the external side, neglecting the inner. As soon as some warmth stirs in the heart, they decide: “There—God has given it…” and give themselves over to fantasies about themselves. Then they look down on all those who do not observe the artistic form of prayer, and not only that, but also on the church prayers themselves and on those who strictly adhere to it, trying not to omit it. As a result, their progress in inner prayer ceases, and they remain with only external practice. And the spiritual life stops.

Be concerned rather about inner prayer, drawing your attention away from the external.

Laborious prayer leads to the reception of the gift of prayer.
