Chapter 2
Prayer is the Center of Christian Life
The work of prayer is the foremost work in Christian life. Prayer is the breathing of the spirit. Where there is prayer, the spirit lives; where there is no prayer, there is no life in the spirit.
(Letter 227. Vol. 2, p. 33)
Prayer is the work of all Christians. The work of prayer is not the work of the silent monks alone, but of all Christians — and this extends to the very highest degrees of prayer. All degrees of prayer are the work of God. With God, all are equal, and He looks only to the heart. As the heart is toward Him, so He is toward that heart, whatever heart it may be. The Lord said: that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You (See: John 17:21).
This is about all Christians. The apostle also says: our life is hidden with Christ in God (Col. 3:3).
