Chapter 56

What Should Be Sought Through Prayer

What should be sought through prayer is the establishment in the heart of a quiet but warm feeling toward God that never departs; not to desire ecstasies and special movements, but when God sends special prayerful feelings, to give thanks for them, not to claim them as your own, and not to grieve when they depart as if over some great loss, but always to humbly descend from them to the quiet feeling toward the Lord.
