Chapter 119

But someone will say: And when will these things be? At what season or time is the deceiver destined to be revealed? And what is the day of the Lord’s appearing?

The disciples likewise sought to learn these things from the Lord, but he hid the day from them, so that he might keep them and all others watchful for the things to come, ever taking thought and daily awaiting the heavenly Bridegroom, lest, through the length of days neglecting the things he commanded, while he delays, people should doze off and fall away from the heavenly life.

For “Be watchful,” he says, “for you do not know on what day or hour your Lord comes, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or in the morning.”

Therefore he says: “Blessed is that servant whom his lord, when he comes, will find watching; truly I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. But if the wicked servant says in his heart, ‘My lord delays in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and maidservants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, the lord of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in two and will assign his portion with the unbelievers; for there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. Therefore I say to you: Be watchful.”

These things, then, our Lord himself, teaching the disciples in the Gospel, declared.

Likewise also after his resurrection, the disciples came and asked him the same things, saying: “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” But he said to them: “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses both in Jerusalem and in Galilee and in all the region of Samaria and to the end of the earth.”
