Chapter 122
Now there was another man likewise in Pontus, himself also presiding over a church, a reverent man indeed and humble-minded, but who did not attend safely to the Scriptures, trusting rather in the visions which he himself saw.
For having hit upon a first, a second, and a third dream, he then began to foretell to the brethren like a prophet: “This I saw, and this is going to happen.”
And once, being led astray, he said: “Know, brethren, that after a year the judgment is going to take place.”
And those who heard him foretelling, as though the day of the Lord were at hand, with weepings and lamentations begged the Lord night and day, having before their eyes the coming day of judgment.
And he brought the brethren into such fear and dread that they abandoned their lands and fields desolate, and the greater part of them sold off their possessions.
But he said to them: “If it does not turn out as I have said, then no longer believe even the Scriptures, but let each one of you do what he wishes.”
But while they were awaiting the outcome, and when the year was fulfilled and none of the things he had spoken came to pass, he himself was put to shame as having lied, while the Scriptures were shown to be truthful; and the brethren were found offended, so that thereafter their virgins married and the men withdrew to farming; and those who had rashly sold their possessions were afterward found begging.
