Chapter 152

This, then, is how the prophet recounts concerning the Antichrist: that he will be shameless and a fosterer of war and a tyrant who dares to exalt himself above every god; who, boasting in his own power and sacking the strongholds of the cities, setting his mind high on gold and silver and precious stone, will speak monstrous words against God, wishing himself alone to be worshiped as God.

Concerning him no part of Scripture has been silent, and the prophets foretold him as coming for the destruction of many, and the Lord bore witness to these things, and the apostles taught the same about him, and John in the Apocalypse revealed his name mystically by a number.

This one the Lord declared to be the abomination of desolation, and the apostle taught that he would be present as the son of the devil according to the working of Satan.

This man, having struck the city of the Tyrians, will lay it desolate, and having made war on the land of Egypt will lay it low, and will raze the whole country of the Libyans, and will destroy the king of the Ethiopians together with his army by the slaughter of the sword.

And he, lifted up above all kings and above every god, will build the city of Jerusalem and will raise up the overthrown temple, and will restore to the Jews all the country and its borders, and summoning their people out of the slavery of the nations he will declare himself their king; and the disobedient will worship him as God and will bow the knee to him, supposing him to be the Christ, not understanding what was said by the prophet, namely how he is a deceiver and not true.

For Jeremiah says: “Because they did not obey the truth, then he will speak to this people and to Jerusalem a spirit of error.”

Therefore the apostle, knowing the deception of the people and the working of Satan that would come to be among them, said: “When they say, ‘Peace and security,’ then sudden destruction comes upon them, as the birth-pang upon her who is giving birth, and they shall by no means escape.”
