Chapter 155

Therefore, foreseeing these things, the Lord says: “Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath”—neither idle as regards righteousness, nor preoccupied with the affairs of this life, as in winter—lest suddenly that day come upon you as a snare.

“For if those days had not been shortened,” he says, “no flesh would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.”

“But after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars are burning as they fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken; and then they will see the Son of Man coming with power and great glory.”

For if the devil received authority for a little while to disturb the earth, as it is written—God gave him authority to test those who dwell upon the earth—how much more will the Son of God, who has received all authority over things heavenly and earthly and under the earth, disturb the whole world and the elements in it, for the vindication of the saints, coming with angelic power and the Father’s glory, when he comes to be glorified among all his saints and to be marveled at among all who call upon him, to repay tribulation to those who afflict us, but to us who are afflicted, rest.
