Saint Ignatius (Brianchaninov) (1807–1867) was a 19th-century Russian Orthodox bishop and one of the foremost ascetic and spiritual writers of modern Orthodoxy. He distilled the teaching of the Fathers — above all the Philokalic tradition on prayer, repentance, and watchfulness — into clear Russian prose for a modern readership, and is best known for his collected ascetic writings.
Born Dmitry Alexandrovich Brianchaninov into a noble family of the Vologda region, he was educated at the Military Engineering School in Saint Petersburg, where his evident gifts marked him for a brilliant secular career. He renounced it for the monastic life, receiving tonsure in 1831 with the name Ignatius. In 1834 he was appointed archimandrite of the Trinity–Saint Sergius Hermitage near Saint Petersburg, which he governed for over two decades.
In 1857 he was consecrated bishop of the Caucasus and the Black Sea. Frail health led him to retire in 1861 to the Nikolo-Babaevsky Monastery, where he devoted his remaining years to writing. His principal works include the Ascetic Experiences (Аскетические опыты), the Ascetic Sermon, the Offering to Contemporary Monasticism, and the Discourse on Death.
He reposed at Nikolo-Babaevsky Monastery in 1867. He was glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1988, together with St Theophan the Recluse, and is commemorated on 30 April; his writings remain among the most widely read guides to Orthodox ascetic life.
