Where the first volume surveyed the whole ascetic road, this second volume of St Ignatius Brianchaninov's Ascetic Experiences draws its weight toward one thing: prayer. A linked cycle of homilies climbs from the beginner's cell rule, through prayer in church and aloud, to the remembrance of God and prayer of the mind and heart — ending in his great Homily on the Jesus Prayer. Around it stand his essays on the fear and love of God, His judgments, His image in man, and the way of salvation.
