The Synod on Each Church Keeping Its Own Custom

1 The holy synod said: The [Roman] throne has ancient [customs] that have been handed down; and we ought, accordingly, not to contend with one another, but to yield. For let not the Church of the Romans [be reproached] in such things, [for] she has not fallen. Let the Church of Constantinople likewise keep the things proper to her, which she received from of old; and so too the thrones of the East. If the Church of the Romans never received a man from the laity into the episcopate, let her keep this; for let each one keep his own [usage], and let us not do harm by transgression. But [let it be said] that the easterners observed this, whereas with us the holy Church of the Constantinopolitans has been led to bring such men forward, not [only] from clergy but [also] from laity; so that the vote of the high-priesthood may come to them—and even if it [be granted] to them not [otherwise], yet [to those] who have proved themselves in the lay order.

2 …let us anathematize all things [written] against him, and reject [them]; and those who now receive them, let us hand over to the same anathema.
