Subscription of Paul of Ancona and the Roman Legates
1 I, Paul, least of bishops of the holy Church of Ancona, and legate of the holy apostolic throne and of my lord John, the most blessed supreme hierarch of the holy catholic and apostolic Church of the Romans and ecumenical Pope, in this holy and ecumenical synod—those things which, according to the charge, the command, and the consent of our most holy apostolic and ecumenical Pope John, and the consent of the holy Church of the Constantinopolitans, and the agreement of the legates of the three hierarchical thrones, and the joint vote of the holy and ecumenical synod, [were enacted]—I accept this most venerable Photios as lawful and canonically established patriarch in the dignity of the hierarchy, and I am in communion with him according to the series of the letters, that is, the text of the commonitorium. And I reject and anathematize the synod that was constituted against him in the holy Church of the Constantinopolitans; likewise also all the things lately [done] against him in the times of the pious memory of Adrian the former Pope of Rome—according to the chapter of the commonitorium, I annul and anathematize and reject them, and I in no way count this among the number of councils. And since, if it should happen that any should separate themselves from the holy Church of God and turn away from their own chief shepherd and ecumenical patriarch, the holy Photios, [I decree] that they be separated from the holy Church of God and remain out of communion, until they return to the holy Church of God, and enter into communion with the most holy and ecumenical patriarch, and be of one mind and of one accord with the apostolic throne. Moreover, calling the Seventh holy and ecumenical Council at Nicaea the second time, concerning the sacred and venerable icons, in the times of the pious memory of Adrian the former Pope of Rome, and under Tarasius the most holy patriarch of the Church of the Constantinopolitans, a holy and ecumenical Seventh Council, and numbering it among the holy councils, I have signed with my own hand.
2 The same also Eugenius the most God-beloved bishop of the holy Church of Ostia, and Peter the most God-fearing presbyter and cardinal, signed with their own hands. And since, for the confirmation and recognition of what was written, as was said above, the document of the most holy legates of elder Rome was read, after the reading the holy synod answered: Blessed be God, who through the cooperation of your most holy Pope John has united His holy catholic and apostolic Church. Then the most holy legates of the Eastern thrones also took [the parchments]—Basil the most God-beloved metropolitan of Martyropolis, also holding the throne of the Church of Antioch; Elias the most God-fearing presbyter and legate of Jerusalem; and further Kosmas the most God-
3 fearing presbyter and apocrisiarius of Alexandria—and each of them signed with his own hand thus.
