245. A General Account of the Appearances of the Lord by Saint Mark and Saint Paul. Mk. 16:9–14; 1 Cor. 15:3–7

Rising early on the first day of the week, the Lord Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. She went and reported to those who had been with him, weeping and mourning. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. After this he appeared in another form to two of them on the road as they were going into the country. And they returned and reported to the others, but (some) did not believe them either. Finally he appeared to the eleven themselves as they reclined at table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him risen.

I passed on to you, as the holy Paul writes, what I also received, that Christ the Lord died for our sins according to Scripture, and that he was buried, and that he rose on the third day according to Scripture, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, and again to all the Apostles.
