79. The Raising of the Daughter of Jairus. Mt. 9:23–26; Mk. 5:35–43; Lk. 8:49–56

While the Lord was still speaking these things, there came one from the house of the synagogue ruler and said to him: Your daughter is dead; why do you trouble the Teacher further? Do not trouble the Teacher. But the Lord Jesus, hearing these words, immediately said to the ruler of the synagogue: Do not fear, only believe, and she shall be saved.

When they came to the house of the synagogue ruler, the Lord permitted no one to follow Him inside and enter the house except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. Having entered the house, the Lord Jesus saw the flute players and the crowd in commotion, weeping and wailing aloud. All were weeping and lamenting over her; but He said to them: Why are you troubled and weeping? Do not weep: the maiden is not dead, but sleeps. And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead. But He sent them all out, saying: Go out.

When the crowd had been sent out, He took with Him the father and mother of the maiden and those of His disciples who were with Him, and goes into the place where the maiden was lying. Then, taking the maiden by the hand, He said to her: “Talitha, koumi,” which means: Maiden, arise! And her spirit returned; and she immediately rose and walked, for she was twelve years old. And He ordered that food be given to her. Those who saw this and her parents came into great amazement. The Lord strictly commanded them to tell no one what had happened, that no one should know of this. But the report of this spread throughout all that land.
