How to Guard Against the Artistic Technique of Prayer

The Jesus Prayer, practiced with faith in the simplicity of the heart, is always salvation-giving. What can prove harmful is the technique associated with it. From this one must guard... One need not rush to this prayer immediately, but first let everyone learn to pray from the heart with the appointed prayers and with prayers in church.

Then, when you notice that someone is beginning to deepen in prayer, you may suggest to him to perform the Jesus Prayer unceasingly, and in this to keep the remembrance of God with fear and reverence. —Prayer is the first work. The main thing sought by prayer is to obtain that spark which was given to Maximus of Kapsokalyvia... This spark is not attracted by any technique, but is given freely by God’s grace. For this reason labor in prayer is required. Teach this to all... But add that the house of prayer is a pure heart, and a peaceful conscience, and zeal for every virtue, and the planting of these in the heart. (10, 190–191)
