Chapter 140
The Beginning Rule: the Whole Lesson at Once
Standing in consciousness and attention in your heart, pronounce unceasingly: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, — without any image or form, by faith that the Lord sees you and attends to you. To establish yourself in this, you should set aside a definite time in the morning or evening, a quarter hour, half hour, or more, according to your ability, for doing this prayer alone. This is after your morning and evening prayers, standing or sitting. By this the beginnings of accustoming yourself will be laid. (1, 244–245)
