1 As for the Westerners, then, if they err in some point of doctrine that shakes the Patristic faith—such as the addition made in the Symbol concerning the Holy Spirit, where the danger is also greatest—then whoever excuses this, when it is not thought worthy of correction, is himself beyond excuse, even if they speak from the throne which, lofty men, they set up as lofty; even if they put forward Peter’s confession; even if they bring in the beatitude spoken upon it; even if they brandish at us the keys of the kingdom. For the more they think to honor him by these, the more they dishonor themselves, since they themselves overturn what he established, and undermine the foundations of the Church he is believed to sustain.

2 Here, then, be a fighter, gentle in everything else—gird on the sword of the Spirit, wield the word of God, which divides flesh and spirit, worldly pride and divine mysteries, and judges human and treacherous imaginations. Strike, as a Levite and a minister of God, those who make war out of the fabrications of their own reasonings, and who put their own head forward for veneration, and require that all fall down before the dignity of their rule.
