A manual for the penitent, built in two movements. First the descent into self-knowledge — pride, malice, the sins of the flesh, and the searching labour of confession; then the ascent to the Chalice. Saint John of Kronstadt sets the anatomy of repentance beside an unflinching account of the Divine Liturgy, where the bread and wine are truly changed into the Body and Blood and the one who communes receives a coal of fire upon the heart.
