“The fast has come, the mother of chastity”[1]. But what kind of time was the period before this day? A time of wandering. The soul went astray after everything pleasant that met its eyes—after persons and things, and more fully after sinful passions. Everyone has his own passion, to which he caters in all things. The time has come to put an end to this. Let each one recognize his own Delilah[2] — who binds him and delivers him to cruel enemies—and forsake her. And you will be given more than Samson received: not only will the hair grow back—good thoughts—and not only will strength return—firmness of will—but the eyes will be opened: the mind will see clearly and behold the Lord, and itself, and what surrounds it in its true light. ”Behold, now is the acceptable time”[3]! ”Behold, now is the day of salvation”![4]
