1 I will not weigh you down with an excessive surfeit of counsel, but will rather save the rest, as it were, for another table. And with God’s help I will prepare for you what remains, provided only that I see you receive these things eagerly, and digest what you have consumed, and grow from them to a full spiritual stature.
1 Οὐ καταβαρυνῶ σε τῇ πλησμονῇ τῇ τῆς παραινέσεως, ἀλλὰ τάχα καὶ εἰς ἑτέραν ταμιεύσομαι τράπεζαν· καὶ Θεοῦ διδόντος παρασκευάσω σοι τὰ λειπόμενα, μόνον ἴδοιμί σε ταῦτα μετ᾽ ὀρέξεως προσηκάμενον, καὶ πέψαντα τὰ βρωθέντα, καὶ πρὸς τὴν πνευματικὴν ἡλικίαν ἀπολαύσαντα.
1 Vicissim artem princeps non censoris odiosi, sed jucundi monitoris hunc habebit loco; iram autem colliget effundetque omnem in adulantes: hos supercilii attractione, hos extera minacitate vultus oculique fastidio, hos verborum acerbitate submoveat, tum maxime cum blandissime adrepere conantur. Vere enim nihil aliud id genus homines nisi mellitum venenum offerunt: et osculantur illi quidem, at simul mordent; mulcent, sed eodem momento dilaniant: mel denique instillant, sed quod haustum venisque conceptum quovis amarius ac perniciosius sumentem afficit. His ne aures quidem suas admovebit, quas potius sapienter praeoccupabit atque praemuniet, ut sine sensu et damno praetervehantur.
