The Path to Salvation is Saint Theophan the Recluse's complete map of the Christian life, from its first seed to its full growth. He traces the three ways that life is born in a soul — the grace of Baptism guarded through a Christian upbringing, the turning of a hardened sinner through repentance, and the long ascetic labor that carries a beginner on to maturity — and around this frame gathers the desert Fathers' whole teaching on holy zeal, the war with the passions, the ordering of one's days, and unceasing prayer. It is at once a manual of Orthodox asceticism and a physician's account of how a person is healed and made whole.
